Soon after we introduced our first GEOLUTION 29, there were the first calls for an even more powerful Big Wheeler. In the ION-G15 we have answered your calls for the 2018 season. With its downhill potential you can really let the gas stand at the Enduro race. But the G15 is also great fun on the trail lap at home – provided that your trails give away what the G15 craves: Adrenaline, technical passages and crisp climbs. We would even use it for technical alpine cross adventures, because like all our GEOLUTION bikes, the 29er Enduro ION-G15 climbs incredibly calmly even steep and long climbs – no matter whether in transfer to the next enduro stage or to the next alpine pass with the following descent.
We have designed the ION-G15 for all the technically experienced and demanding riders who believe in the potential of the large wheels but have not yet found a bike that meets their demands for downhill performance. Be it in enduro racing to experience a lot of flow on the touring classics, or also in occasional bike park use. Our job was to design and build a bike that meets all these requirements without compromise – where you ride it is up to you.
Like all NICOLAI bikes, the ION-G15 is a complete in-house development. From the first drawings, through FEM-supported optimization, to production and final assembly, all work steps take place under one roof. But even the best technical know-how is only worth half as much if we weren’t so fond of biking and spent every free minute on the trail. We build bikes that we want to ride ourselves, and that’s why the ION-G15 closes the gap between the ION-G13 and the G16, offering maximum trail performance in a range where 29’s have rarely been seen before. It combines the good nature of the large wheels with an outstanding downhill performance and the unique sovereignty of our GEOLUTION geometry.
But even if the ION-G15 was made for technical enduro trails and its quiet running there drives the rider to ever new top performances, this does not mean that it is only fun downhill. Due to the steep seat angle and the long chainstays, coupled with the efficient kinematics, the bike climbs excellently. Especially steep and technical climbs can thus be mastered noticeably easier and more relaxed. That’s why the G15 can be used as an enduro racer as well as a long-stroke touring bike. Depending on preference and trail, the ET-Key offers additional geometry fine-tuning, depending on whether in the high or low position with a 0.7° steeper or flatter steering and seat angle and a 8 mm higher/lower bottom bracket. With a total of 5 standard sizes (S to XXL) we have the right frame size for almost every rider, from under 1.60 to over 2 metres.
Of course, the ION-G15 also has all the ingredients that make a real NICOLAI: An optimally fitting tube set, FEM optimized CNC milled parts and the unmistakable welding technology of our welders Thorsten and Sascha make the frame a total work of art. At all pivot points of the four-joint rear frame there are 4-fold sealed industrial bearings and ensure a creamy response, with maximum rigidity and low maintenance. Instead of the squeaky PressFit construction, there is a bolted BSA bottom bracket and because a bike of this class simply cannot do without it, the ION G15 also comes with an ISCG05 mount for chain guide or Bash-Guard. Functional, durable and unmistakable… Just NICOLAI.
We are proud to offer two complete bike versions of the ION G15. By offering only one colour option here – our popular raw finish – and with carefully selected components, we have both dramatically reduced delivery times (by 6-8 weeks) and achieved a truly attractive price. But see for yourself…
The QLF in our QLFLine stands for “Külftal”, our home spot and describes our personal choice of equipment. Maximum trail fun without compromise. For the ION G15 this meant a complete Fox Factory chassis. In the front an incredibly capable Float 36 HSC/LSC Boost suspension fork (160 mm) and in the back a super sensitive Float X2 shock with switchable low-speed pressure stage. Shifting is done with SRAM’s fabulously precise X01 Eagle group, which fits perfectly to the G15 with its 12 gears and 500% ratio bandwidth. With the DT Swiss EX 1501 wheels (30 mm inside width) and the new “Der Baron 2.4 Projekt 29″ Protection Apex” tyres, there are almost no limits uphill or downhill. With its apex carcass reinforcement and powerful traction, even bike park use is possible without problems. The top gravity brake Magura MT7 with the multifunctional HC3 lever is already well known for its combination of stability and braking force and our choice to meet the downhill potential of the G15. Further highlights are the Bikeyoke Revive Dropper support with 160 mm stroke and the built-in quick-vent, as well as the Ergon/Renthal cockpit. And because a bike of this caliber is simply ridden harder, the ION-G15 comes with a Universal Transmissions chain guide.
The special feature of Float X2 is the adjustable damping, which is based on a double-tube system, as with Cane Creek. This allows the large oil volume and the oil flow to be controlled very well. In addition to the air pressure, high and low speed compression and traction stages can be set separately.
The award-winning 36 series offers the right model for every aggressive enduro rider to have great trail fun.
The Enduro version of the SPLINE® ONE line is available with 30 mm rim width. The larger internal width increases the tyre volume with the same tyre width, which improves traction and comfort. The specifically developed surface hardening process allows an unsurpassed ratio of weight to strength and makes the EX 1501 SPLINE® ONE the perfect enduro wheel.
The X01 Eagle™ crankset was developed for winner types. It is completely revised. With the special CARBON TUNED™ laminate technology. The X01 Eagle™ crank is tough when you’re chasing over rough and tumble on the ideal line. The X01 Eagle™ is the strongest, stiffest and lightest crank on the market. With its new Eagle™ Direct Mount chainrings, it is perfect for taking the podium. Providing you want it.
The new Eagle™ rear derailleur not only has a larger capacity; it is also the next stage of the proven X-HORIZON™ technology specially developed for 1x circuits. The larger, lower X-SYNC™ shifting roller with 14 teeth ensures sufficient capacity to handle the cassette with sprockets from 10 to 50 teeth. The design of the rear derailleur is nevertheless compact. It also ensures that you always pedal evenly. Its torque curve is even smoother thanks to the new Type-3 ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH™, so that shifting is quieter and “rounder”.
The clearly defined pressure point and maximum power make it the first choice of gravity and high-speed pilots. The 1-finger HC brake lever modulates the enormous braking power as desired. The HC brake lever and the pressure point adjustment provide the necessary ergonomics to have the brake perfectly under control even on the heaviest terrain. In hard enduro or downhill use, the additional braking power of 4 pistons offers fine dosing and maximum stability, adapted from Magura motorsport experience. Braking power does not have to be heavy. Carbotecture® SL brake handle and aluminium lever reduce the total weight. The 4-piston brakes are characterised by high thermal stability, which is achieved through optimum weight distribution. Optimum use of material where it is needed.
