If you ask us which bike we had the most fun on in the last few years, the answer would be clear: The ION-G16! With this bike we were able to discover how much unused potential can be activated in one go by our revolutionary GEOLUTION geometry. No matter whether it is about fighting for fractions of a second in the enduro stages or mastering ever steeper and more technical descents. Because we have taken the liberty of thinking laterally and questioning the state of the art, the ION-G16 is just as much an enduro race bike as a freerider. Paradoxical as it may sound, the ION-G16 is also one of the most potent bikes in its class uphill. A pioneer in steering dynamics and suspension performance, the ION-G16 is a bike that makes beginners and professionals alike faster.
The new ION-G16 is and remains the right tool for all enduro bikers who “fast” is never “fast enough” and who are always looking for the next adrenaline rush. It is no secret that our GEOLUTION concept plays a major role in this. We look at every nook and cranny of the bike so that you not only have more fun downhill, but are also enthusiastic about the bike uphill. The geometric relationship between wheels, steering angle, and weight distribution between the wheels are the decisive factors for the excellent handling of the ION-G16 when standing. The relationship between saddle, crank and rear wheel axle, on the other hand, are the decisive factors for his incredible climbing behaviour when seated. These two things can and must be considered separately. If the seat angle becomes steeper, the handling of the bike does not necessarily suffer and with a flatter steering angle the bike does not climb worse. All in all, the ION-G16 is better in all situations: It has better climbing ability, feelings of rolling downhill are a thing of the past even in really steep terrain and the rider is simply better integrated into the bike. With this added control and safety, you simply have more fun, have more confidence and are faster on the road as a result. Quite simple, actually. Surprisingly, these advantages are clearly noticeable not only for the professional but also for the beginner. We build this ION-G16 because we want to drive it ourselves.
We have already done the difficult part for you, i.e. throwing all existing conventions on the subject of bike geometries out of the window and breaking completely new ground. However, it was important for us not to follow any trend. Anyone can make a bike “long” (long wheelbase), “low” (low bottom bracket) and “slack” (flat steering angle). But to really find the optimal balance from all the angles and dimensions, so that the bike simply becomes better and more powerful all around, that requires a little more experience and knowledge… and we’re really proud of that. Your job now is just to get involved and experience what the ION-G16 with its GEOLUTION geometry can do for you on the trail. Enjoy the Ride!
With the ET-Key, the ION-G16 offers the possibility to drive two different damper installation lengths (222 x 70 and 216 x 63) and thus has two suspension travel options (155 or 175 mm) without affecting the geometry. The ION-G16 thus covers an even wider range of applications: enduro, super enduro, big bike or freerider, jumps in all sizes, single trail, bike park or even a local downhill race… A bike could hardly be more versatile. The ION-G16 is our universal answer.
Like all our bikes, the ION-G16 is developed from scratch and manufactured by us. From the tube sets specially drawn for us, the elaborately FEM-optimized milled parts manufactured on a 5-axis CNC machine, through the welding work to the final assembly – everything takes place under one roof and by people who are 100 % behind NICOLAI. With its 4-fold sealed ball bearings at all pivot points, the even stiffer BOOST rear end with large tyre clearance, the carefully calculated rear end kinematics, the ION-G16 is just as much a testimony to German engineering and highest craftsmanship as it is an expression of our love for bikes. Instead of the squeaky PressFit construction, there is a bolted BSA bottom bracket and because a bike of this class simply cannot do without it, the ION-G16 also comes with an ISCG05 mount for chain guide or Bash-Guard. Perfect driving performance, longevity and nowadays only rarely found independence are features that the ION-G16 can also boast for itself.
NICOLAI ION G16 – Enduro and Freerider with a blunt tendency to speed.
Such a powerful enduro bike like our ION-G16 doesn’t make it easy to choose the right equipment without making any compromises. We believe we have made the right choice with the two complete bike versions available, QLFLine and TechLine, so that you will experience exactly the same enthusiasm and flow for which we love the ION G16. And because you only have to wait 6-8 weeks at the most before you can chase it over the trails with our complete bikes in raw-worksfinish, the anticipation quickly turns into real riding pleasure.
We put everything into the QLFLine to touch the ION-G16 – an equipment that works just as well on the trail as at the Enduro race or in the park. To do this, we gave it a complete Fox Factory chassis with the coveted golden Kashima coating. With the Float 36 HSC/LSC Boost suspension fork (170 mm) and the Float X2 rear shock with switchable low-speed pressure range you are ready for any challenge. Matching these are the ultra-robust DT Swiss EX 1501 wheels (30 mm inside width), rear “Der Baron Projekt Apex” 2.4″ wide CONTI Protection tyres – rear a Mountain King II and – and a Magura MT7 brake system with 2-finger levers, as well as the famous Bikeyoke Revive Dropper support with 160 mm stroke and its built-in quick release. As with all our Bio bikes in 2018, gears are shifted with the fabulously precise X01 Eagle Group from SRAM, with its 12 gears and 500% transmission ratio. On top of it are the Ergon contact points and a proven Renthal carbon handlebar. With this equipment, with its perfect balance of robustness, performance and weight, even the most demanding biker has hardly any room for technically oriented improvements. We promised you that you won’t have to compromise with the ION-G16.
The special feature of Float X2 is the adjustable damping, which is based on a double-tube system, as with Cane Creek. This allows the large oil volume and the oil flow to be controlled very well. In addition to the air pressure, high and low speed compression and traction stages can be set separately.
The award-winning 36 series offers the right model for every aggressive enduro rider to have great trail fun.
The Enduro version of the SPLINE® ONE line is available with 30 mm rim width. The larger internal width increases the tyre volume with the same tyre width, which improves traction and comfort. The specifically developed surface hardening process allows an unsurpassed ratio of weight to strength and makes the EX 1501 SPLINE® ONE the perfect enduro wheel.
The X01 Eagle™ crankset was developed for winner types. It is completely revised. With the special CARBON TUNED™ laminate technology. The X01 Eagle™ crank is tough when you’re chasing over rough and tumble on the ideal line. The X01 Eagle™ is the strongest, stiffest and lightest crank on the market. With its new Eagle™ Direct Mount chainrings, it is perfect for taking the podium. Providing you want it.
The new Eagle™ rear derailleur not only has a larger capacity; it is also the next stage of the proven X-HORIZON™ technology specially developed for 1x circuits. The larger, lower X-SYNC™ shifting roller with 14 teeth ensures sufficient capacity to handle the cassette with sprockets from 10 to 50 teeth. The design of the rear derailleur is nevertheless compact. It also ensures that you always pedal evenly. Its torque curve is even smoother thanks to the new Type-3 ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH™, so that shifting is quieter and “rounder”.
The clearly defined pressure point and maximum power make it the first choice of gravity and high-speed pilots. The 1-finger HC brake lever modulates the enormous braking power as desired. The HC brake lever and the pressure point adjustment provide the necessary ergonomics to have the brake perfectly under control even on the heaviest terrain. In hard enduro or downhill use, the additional braking power of 4 pistons offers fine dosing and maximum stability, adapted from Magura motorsport experience. Braking power does not have to be heavy. Carbotecture® SL brake handle and aluminium lever reduce the total weight. The 4-piston brakes are characterised by high thermal stability, which is achieved through optimum weight distribution. Optimum use of material where it is needed.
