Enduro not your thing? Long rides on your home trails, big days out in the mountains or preparing for a marathon race more your thing? You watch your weight – both you and your bike? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you! The Saturn 11 is right up your street. Like its legendary predecessor, the new Saturn 11 is a state-of-the-art race bike where we have pushed the limits of what is currently possible in aluminium frame construction. The 120 mm front and 105 mm of rear travel is light and conservative, but thanks to the smooth rolling 29 inch wheels, completely new kinematics and well-balanced modern geometry, the Saturn 11 is a bike that does more than you might expect. It’s an efficient, easy climbing full suspension race bike but also a safe and capable trail bike.
We released the first Saturn at Eurobike tradeshow in 2002. The superlight aluminium frame was celebrated as a technical masterpiece. The tension bar between the seat and down tubes to dissipate forces helped it achieve cult status in a very short time. With the latest Saturn, we have pulled out all the stops to remove any unnecessary weight: at 2.7 kg for the frame and shock, we succeeded. This is most obvious in the one-piece 180 g rocker link, which was FEM optimised and then milled from a solid aluminium block in one of our five axis CNC machines. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Every frame tube and milled part in the Saturn has been meticulously optimised, from the dropouts to the chain stay yoke. Complete bikes that weigh less than 10 kg can be easily assembled.
Lightweight must never come at the expense of function. What’s the point of the lightest bike if it spends more time being serviced and ridden, with excessive flex under power and bearings that don’t make it through a season? To ensure the performance and reliability you come to expect from Nicolai, all pivot points use large bearings equipped with additional seals. Carefully done, consistent fish scale welds are a hallmark of ours, contributing to a frame that will still be performing long into the future.
Another very important aspect of the Saturn 11 is its geometry, which is unusually potent for an XC race bike. Derived from the GEOLUTION geometry of our trail and enduro bikes, Saturn also has a relatively slack head angle and steep seat angle, a low bottom bracket and long chainstays. We combine the generous REACH with a short stem. Together this results in a very effective and efficient seated position where you can stay seated even on the steepest climbs. In technical sections and downhills you have a lot of freedom to move and great stability which together create safety and ultimately allow higher speeds. Instead of a sketchy cross country frame the Saturn screams: Full Throttle!
We have also further developed the kinematics of the four bar rear end. Direct and efficient, but with more comfort and traction than the travel figure suggests. With a 120 mm fork the bike is extremely well balanced. Every tester has commented on the remarkably comfortable ride, but impressive efficiency. Another advantage of our frame design is that there is space for two water bottles inside the front triangle, even size S frames. Like our other frames, the Saturn has a BSA bottom bracket and a 5 year warranty.
NICOLAI Saturn 11 – our lightest and fastest full suspension race bike with the capability of a trail bike.
Each frame / complete bike is supplied with a spare rear derailleur hanger.
If after a few years of hard work a bearing on a Nicolai frame needs to be replaced, a RADO needs to be replaced due to a fall or a frame needs a new coating, the NICOLAI service staff is the right contact. Since we at NICOLAI manufacture all small parts on our machines, we can also produce spare parts for older models if required. We therefore guarantee spare parts availability of at least 10 years for all Nicolai products.
