When we first transferred the GEOLUTION concept to 29er Trailbikes with the first prototype of the ION-G13, we broke new ground. Soon the concerns turned into pure enthusiasm. The ION-G13 can do more than you might think at first glance – uphill as well as downhill. Basically, the ION-G13 is a trail bike that lets you heat over your home trails and enjoy long trail tours… but there’s more. Thanks to its progressive GEOLUTION geometry, the ION-G13 takes you uphill even when other bikes are already at their limits. And downhill you take even the steepest passages with a subjective safety like you have never experienced before. The ION-G13 is a bike with an incredibly wide range of use – from the classic tour to the aggressive all-mountain. The ION-G13 is the bike we ride every day on our own trails.
The reason why the G13 inspires trailbikers and 29er fans so much is on the one hand because of our more than 20 years of experience in the development and production of high-end bikes and on the other hand because we are never too good to try out new approaches. Building on experience, constantly improving and at the same time remaining open to new approaches.
Would you like some examples? In concrete terms, the ION-G13 features the high-quality 7000 mm aluminium tube set, the FEM-optimized CNC milled parts and the carefully drawn welding seams. All together result in a frame with maximum rigidity, durability and low weight. The Boost rear suspension provides additional rigidity and tyre clearance, while the elaborately 4-fold sealed ball bearings at all pivot points ensure sensitive response and minimum maintenance. Thanks to the carefully optimized Anti-Squat values, the ION-G13 is very efficient to drive. At the same time, however, it also offers exemplary traction and high reserves if the landing does not go quite as planned. Nothing has been left to chance here. Even if we believe in the advantages of single shifts, you will still find the possibility to mount a front derailleur and double cranks on the ION-G13. An ISCG05 adapter for chain guide or Bash-Guard is of course also available.
The GEOLUTION geometry developed by us is the second special feature of the ION-G13, where “Long, Low & Slack” is not just a trend, but a philosophy really thought through to the end. GEOLUTION improves almost every aspect of bike performance – uphill as well as downhill.
Experiential for all types of riders, from experts to beginners. Anyone who has ever fought their way up a steep trail sitting on their saddle nose knows how important an optimal weight distribution is for the climbing ability of a bike. Our GEOLUTION bikes have a steeper seat angle and longer chainstays than currently usual for good reason. This is the only way to keep enough pressure on the front wheel at all times. But also downhill and on technical trails the ION-G13 exceeds the expectations of a trail bike.
Every aspect of the bike, from the flat steering angle, the large reach with short stem and of course the carefully balanced weight distribution ensures the unique GEOLUTION handling and riding experience. Believe us, we have tried a lot and are sure: Who has once experienced which security and sovereignty the ION-G13 imparts, who has once astonished as before difficult passages are suddenly playfully feasible with it does not want to drive anything else. In order to be able to adapt the ION-G13 even better to the needs, the ET-Key integrated in the rear shock mount has two settings (Low and High). Depending on the position, the geometry is 0.7° steeper or flatter and the bottom bracket higher or lower.
By the way, with a total of 5 frame sizes we are sure to have the right bike for every rider, whether a petite 1.60m biker or the 2-meter man.

A bicycle frame and its components are exposed to extreme forces during use. In order to develop a durable, robust but also lightweight bicycle frame, all components are designed at NICOLAI GmbH using topology optimization.
Topology optimization is a computer-based calculation method by which a favorable basic shape (topology) for components under mechanical load can be determined. This text from the textbook abstractly but aptly describes which processes we use to develop new components. In topology optimization, an algorithm calculates the optimized mass distribution in a component based on defined installation spaces, defined forces, material properties and component geometries. Thus, lighter and stiffer structures can be developed. However, these procedures are only a tool and one of many. However, the most important tool for an engineer is professional experience. The combination of many years of professional experience and computer-based optimization software creates components that are second to none, both technically and optically.
If after a few years of hard work a bearing on a Nicolai frame needs to be replaced, a RADO needs to be replaced due to a fall or a frame needs a new coating, the NICOLAI service staff is the right contact. Since we at NICOLAI manufacture all small parts on our machines, we can also produce spare parts for older models if required. We therefore guarantee spare parts availability of at least 10 years for all Nicolai products.
