Soon after we introduced our first GEOLUTION 29, there were the first calls for an even more powerful Big Wheeler. In the ION-G15 we have answered your calls for the 2018 season. With its downhill potential you can really let the gas stand at the Enduro race. But the G15 is also great fun on the trail lap at home – provided that your trails give away what the G15 craves: Adrenaline, technical passages and crisp climbs. We would even use it for technical alpine cross adventures, because like all our GEOLUTION bikes, the 29er Enduro ION G15 climbs incredibly calmly even steep and long climbs – no matter whether in transfer to the next enduro stage or to the next alpine pass with the following S3/S4 downhill.
We have designed the ION-G15 for all the technically experienced and demanding riders who believe in the potential of the large wheels but have not yet found a bike that meets their demands for downhill performance. Be it in enduro racing to experience a lot of flow on the touring classics, or also in occasional bike park use. Our job was to design and build a bike that meets all these requirements without compromise – where you ride it is up to you.
Like all NICOLAI bikes, the ION-G15 is a complete in-house development. From the first drawings, through FEM-supported optimization, to production and final assembly, all work steps take place under one roof. But even the best technical know-how is only worth half as much if we weren’t so fond of biking and spent every free minute on the trail. We build bikes that we want to ride ourselves, and that’s why the ION-G15 closes the gap between the ION G13 and the G16, offering maximum trail performance in a range where 29’s have rarely been seen before. It combines the good nature of the large wheels with an outstanding downhill performance and the unique sovereignty of our GEOLUTION geometry.
But even if the ION G15 was made for technical enduro trails and its quiet running there drives the rider to ever new top performances, this does not mean that it is only fun downhill. Due to the steep seat angle and the long chainstays, coupled with the efficient kinematics, the bike climbs excellently. Especially steep and technical climbs can thus be mastered noticeably easier and more relaxed. That’s why the G15 can be used as an enduro racer as well as a long-stroke touring bike. Depending on preference and trail, the ET-Key offers additional geometry fine-tuning, depending on whether in the high or low position with a 0.7° steeper or flatter steering and seat angle and a 8 mm higher/lower bottom bracket. With a total of 5 standard sizes (S to XXL) we have the right frame size for almost every rider, from 1.60 to over 2 metres.
Of course, the ION G15 also has all the ingredients that make a real NICOLAI: An optimally fitting tube set, FEM optimized CNC milled parts and the unmistakable welding technology of our welders Torsten and Sascha make the frame a total work of art. At all pivot points of the four-joint rear frame there are 4-fold sealed industrial bearings and ensure a creamy response, with maximum rigidity and low maintenance. Instead of the squeaky PressFit construction, there is a bolted BSA bottom bracket and because a bike of this class simply cannot do without it, the ION-G15 also comes with an ISCG05 mount for chain guide or Bash-Guard. Functional, durable and unmistakable… Just NICOLAI.
As always with us, you can customise your frame with colours – whether with robust powder coatings, light anodised colours or our already legendary raw finish. With the coloured accents of the “Extra Love” parts you can upgrade your bike even more. Even custom geometries are possible for an extra charge, although we honestly do not know what there is still to improve in our GEOLUTION geometry.
A bicycle frame and its components are exposed to extreme forces during use. In order to develop a durable, robust but also lightweight bicycle frame, all components are designed at NICOLAI GmbH using topology optimization.
Topology optimization is a computer-based calculation method by which a favorable basic shape (topology) for components under mechanical load can be determined. This text from the textbook abstractly but aptly describes which processes we use to develop new components. In topology optimization, an algorithm calculates the optimized mass distribution in a component based on defined installation spaces, defined forces, material properties and component geometries.
Thus, lighter and stiffer structures can be developed. However, these procedures are only a tool and one of many. However, the most important tool for an engineer is professional experience. The combination of many years of professional experience and computer-based optimization software creates components that are second to none, both technically and optically.
If after a few years of hard work a bearing on a Nicolai frame needs to be replaced, a RADO needs to be replaced due to a fall or a frame needs a new coating, the NICOLAI service staff is the right contact. Since we at NICOLAI manufacture all small parts on our machines, we can also produce spare parts for older models if required. We therefore guarantee spare parts availability of at least 10 years for all Nicolai products.
