The enduro hype isn’t your thing? You prefer to drive long laps on your hometrails, go on extensive low mountain tours at the weekend and prepare yourself conscientiously for every marathon date in the calendar? You pay close attention to your weight, with you and your bike? Then rejoice, because we have not forgotten you, and exactly for you we have developed the Saturn 11. Like its legendary predecessor, the new Saturn-11 is a state-of-the-art race bike where we have pushed the limits of what is currently possible in aluminium frame construction. As far as suspension travel is concerned, the Saturn 11 with 105 mm at the rear and 120 mm at the front may sound rather conservative. But thanks to the smooth running of the 29″ wheels, its completely new kinematics and the well-balanced modern geometry, the Saturn 11 is a bike that goes beyond categories – efficient, propulsive and easy to climb as only a few race fullies are and at the same time as safe and powerful as a trail bike.
When we presented our first Saturn to the public at the Eurobike trade fair in 2002, the super-light aluminium fly frame was celebrated as a technical masterpiece. The tie rod between the seat and down tube to dissipate the damper forces has achieved cult status in a very short time. Even with the latest Saturn we have pulled out all the stops so that no unnecessary gram of aluminium can be found on the frame at the end. And with a frame weight of just 2.7 kg (including shock absorber), we obviously succeeded. The most striking element of the Saturn is certainly the one-piece reversing rocker milled from the solid. No less than 180 g (???) is the FEM-optimized work of art that our 5-axis milling machines have peeled out of a single solid aluminium block. But of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Every frame tube and every milled part on the Saturn, from the beautifully milled dropouts to the chain stay yoke, has been meticulously weight-optimized to achieve the best possible weight in the end. And if you take a close look, you will even find the filigree aluminium strut, which absorbs the damper forces and thus technically optimally reinforces the butted seat tube. Even if we only offer the Saturn 2018 as a frame and frame kit, even without exaggerated lightweight construction, complete bikes can be assembled around and under 10 kg without further ado.
But lightweight construction alone is only half the battle and above all must never come at the expense of function. What’s the use, the lightest bike, if it has to be serviced constantly, twists in the hard start like a soft cooked noodle or the bearings are already through after a racing season? In order to achieve the same stability, stiffness and robustness for which our bikes are well known and at the same time to guarantee a permanently sensitive response, all pivot points are very large and equipped with multiple sealed industrial bearings. The carefully drawn welding seams, one of the most well-known characteristics of our bikes, also contribute to the fact that the occurring forces are optimally distributed and the frame thus becomes durable.
Another very important aspect of the Saturn 11 is its geometry, which is unusually potent for a race bike. Derived from the GEOLUTION geometry of our trail and enduro bikes, Saturn also has a relatively flat steering and steep seat angle, a deep bottom bracket and long chainstays. We combine the generous top tube (= long REACH) with a short stem. Together this results in a very effective and propulsive sitting position, with which you can sit down even on the steepest climbs. Instead of being forced into the cradle by the rising front uphill, you are free to decide how to get up the mountain most effectively and quickly. In technical passages and downhill you have a lot of freedom of movement and an unusually high running smoothness which together create safety and ultimately also allow higher speeds there. Instead of Racebike’s usual capricious handling it says here: Full throttle ahead!
Of course, we have also adapted the kinematics at the four-joint rear end to the new capabilities of the Saturn 11. Direct and efficient, yet with more comfort and traction than you would ever expect from the 105 mm, the chassis is extremely well balanced with a 120 mm suspension fork at the front. Every tester who has driven our Saturn 11 attests to its remarkable comfort combined with high drive neutrality and efficiency. Another advantage of the selected kinematics is that even in frame size S there is room for two drinking bottles in the main frame. Like all our frames, Saturn comes with a BSA bottom bracket and a 5-year warranty.
Optically, the Saturn 11 also offers all design options. Whether powder coating or anodising of your choice or our popular and lightest raw finish, which decor colour or whether the Extra Love parts anodised in the colour of your choice still set colourful accents… the possibilities are almost limitless and guarantee a thoroughly individual bike.
NICOLAI Saturn 11 – our lightest and fastest Racefully with the trustworthy safe handling of a trail bike.
Each frame / complete bike is supplied with an additional shift hanger.
If after a few years of hard work a bearing on a Nicolai frame needs to be replaced, a RADO needs to be replaced due to a fall or a frame needs a new coating, the NICOLAI service staff is the right contact. Since we at NICOLAI manufacture all small parts on our machines, we can also produce spare parts for older models if required. We therefore guarantee spare parts availability of at least 10 years for all Nicolai products.
