SATURN 14 ST
NICOLAI’s interpretation of the radical trail bike is the SATURN 14 ST. With its modern and balanced GEOLUTION TRAIL geometry it’s perfect for a lap from home, around a trail centre, or bikepark. Agile, stable and easy-climbing, that’s what GEOLUTION TRAIL brings to the party. You can say goodbye to going ‘over the bars’ and the front wheel ‘wandering’ uphill. Just get on with riding! The SATURN 14 ST has a reinforced tube set, making it strong enough for the bike park, whilst the SATURN 14 is still available for those that might not be pushing the limits quite so much. With two possible wheel sizes, geometry adjustment and water bottle mounts, it is the most versatile NICOLAI trail bike we have ever built.
We have been manufacturing and delivering the SATURN 14 for over six months and we have received an enormous amount of positive feedback from Day 1. The versatility of the frame makes this bike a true all-rounder up and downhill. But there were some questions: Why doesn’t this frame have bike park approval, and why is it limited to 34mm fork stanchions?
The SATURN 14 in its current version is not warrantied for bike park use or suspension forks over 34mm stanchions. Since we worked hard to reduce frame weight where possible, we had to place limits on the frame for its intended purpose. However, the number of enquiries continued to increase. Feedback reflected the fact that the GEOLUTION geometry and frame kinematics can increase trail performance and overwhelm a 34mm stanchion fork – we needed to do something.
Due to our “modular frame system” and continuing our in-house frame production in Mehle, Germany, we are now able to offer the SATURN 14 in a tougher version and with bike park approval. The frame gains the suffix ‘ST’.
NICOLAI SATURN 14 ST has a thicker down tube, seat tube, and top tube, as well as gussets on the head tube. We also use stronger rear dropouts and chainstays to increase stiffness.
The frame travel is still set at 138/130mm, but can be fitted with a burlier fork up to 160mm travel.
The SATURN 14 ST frame is the basis for a 27.5″ or 29″ setup. The 29″ frame can be easily converted to 27.5″ wheels with a deeper lower headset cup from CANE CREEK or RESET RACING and longer Mutators. With 29″ wheels and a metric 210x50mm shock, the rear suspension gives 130mm travel, with the smaller wheel size and a 210x55mm damper, 138mm travel is possible. To adapt the SATURN 14 ST further, you can use our Mutators. Head angle too steep or bottom bracket too low? Easy. With a total of 5x frame sizes we are sure to have the right bike for every rider, 1.60 or 2m tall.
As with all NICOLAI frames, we offer complete individualisation. Choose from various powder coatings, anodised colours or the legendary raw look, plus colour accents of our “Extra Love” parts or Tailor Made custom geometry.
We offer the SATURN 14 in two versions. The SATURN 14 with the suffix ST is manufactured with a reinforced tube set. This gives the bike clearance for forks with an length of up to 570mm and a diameter of 36mm. The standard SATURN 14 has no approval for the bike park and the fork length is limited to 550mm. The frame weight increases by about 300gr depending on the frame size.
We at Nicolai exclusively use the alloy 7020-T6 (AlZn4,5Mg1) for our frames. Compared to our competitors, who mostly use aluminium 6061-T6, this grade has much better strength values.
The tensile strength of 7020 compared to 6061 aluminium is about one third higher. The elasticity is about one fifth higher. These properties, coupled with high quality welding, result in a bicycle frame that is far superior to the average in terms of durability.
In comparison to carbon, aluminium is much more robust and tough, so that bottom contact, falls or stone impacts cannot harm the structure.
